What Is Amazonite?

Amazonite is the familiar green to blue-green variety of potassium feldspar, most commonly microcline. Mineralogical references note that the name has also sometimes been applied to green orthoclase. Microcline has the formula KAlSi₃O₈ and crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system.

Amazonite typically ranges from pale green and turquoise-green to stronger blue-green. White streaks, patches, or perthitic intergrowths are common in natural material.

Microcline has a Mohs hardness of about 6 to 6.5 and a specific gravity around 2.54 to 2.57. It has perfect cleavage on one direction and good cleavage on another, so polished pieces and jewelry can chip along cleavage planes even though the surface is moderately resistant to scratching.

Research shows that Amazonite color is commonly associated with elevated lead content and lead-related color centers. Some green microcline has also been linked with divalent iron, so the color mechanism is not identical in every specimen. It is therefore too broad to say that every Amazonite owes its color to one single cause.

Notable Amazonite occurs in granitic pegmatites and other feldspar-rich rocks. Famous sources include Russia, Colorado in the United States, Madagascar, Brazil, and other pegmatite districts.
