What Is Andalusite?

Andalusite is an aluminum silicate mineral with the formula Al₂SiO₅. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and is one of three common Al₂SiO₅ polymorphs, along with kyanite and sillimanite. They share the same overall chemistry but have different crystal structures stable under different pressure-temperature conditions.

Andalusite commonly forms elongated prismatic crystals with nearly square cross sections. Colors include pink to reddish brown and may also include yellow, green, white, gray, and rarely violet.

Gem-quality Andalusite is famous for strong pleochroism. A single transparent stone can show different combinations of green, brown, yellow, and reddish colors when viewed along different crystallographic directions. Skilled faceting can display more than one color at once.

Andalusite has a Mohs hardness of about 6.5 to 7.5 and a specific gravity of about 3.13 to 3.21. It is commonly found in metamorphic rocks formed under relatively low to moderate pressure, including schists and hornfels.

Andalusite was recognized and named in the scientific mineralogical era rather than being known in antiquity under its modern species name.

Name Origin
Jean-Claude Delamétherie named Andalusite in 1798 for what he believed was an Andalusian locality in Spain. Later scholarship showed that the original specimens were probably from El Cardoso in Guadalajara, a locality mistakenly thought to be in Andalusia. The name therefore preserves an early geographic error.

Metamorphic Importance
Andalusite is important to geologists because its presence helps constrain the pressure-temperature history of metamorphic rocks. Together with kyanite and sillimanite, it is a classic example of polymorphism in mineralogy.
