What Is Andradite Garnet?
Andradite is a calcium iron garnet with the ideal formula Ca3Fe3+2(SiO4)3. It crystallizes in the isometric crystal system and belongs to the garnet group.
Colors range widely: yellow, yellow-green, emerald green, brown, reddish brown, gray-black, and black. Important gem and collector varieties include Demantoid, the green chromium-bearing gem variety; Topazolite, a yellow to yellow-brown variety; and Melanite, a dark brown to black titanium-bearing variety.
Andradite has a Mohs hardness of about 6.5 to 7 and a specific gravity around 3.8 to 3.9. It commonly forms dodecahedral and trapezohedral crystals.
Geologically, Andradite is especially associated with skarn deposits and contact-metamorphosed calcium-rich rocks, but it also occurs in serpentinites, chlorite schists, and some alkaline igneous rocks.
