Aqua Aura Quartz is treated quartz, not a naturally blue quartz variety. It begins with crystalline quartz, usually clear rock crystal, and receives an extremely thin gold surface coating applied by a controlled deposition process.
Gemological researchers documented Aqua Aura in the late 1980s and confirmed gold on treated quartz surfaces. The transparent gold film produces blue to greenish-blue transmission color and strong superficial iridescence.
The quartz underneath remains SiO2, trigonal, and about Mohs 7. The treatment changes the appearance of the surface rather than turning quartz into a new mineral species.
Gemological testing found the coating fairly durable in normal handling, but it remains a surface treatment. Buffing, recutting, repolishing, and repeated abrasion can remove or damage the gold film even though the quartz beneath is relatively hard.
