What Is Black Onyx?
True Onyx is a variety of Agate/Chalcedony composed primarily of SiO2. In strict mineralogical usage, it shows straight, parallel bands, classically black and white.
Much material sold today as Black Onyx is uniformly black chalcedony that has been dyed or otherwise color-enhanced. This treatment is longstanding and common, so an opaque, perfectly uniform black color should not automatically be assumed natural.
As chalcedony, Onyx has a Mohs hardness of about 6.5 to 7 and a specific gravity around 2.6 to 2.65. It has a waxy luster when natural and can polish to a high gloss.
Important trade-name warning: “Mexican Onyx,” “Onyx Marble,” and many carved decorative objects sold simply as “onyx” are often banded calcite or aragonite rather than quartz-family Onyx.
