Most material sold as Black Tourmaline is Schorl, the iron-rich tourmaline species with idealized formula NaFe²⁺₃Al₆(Si₆O₁₈)(BO₃)₃(OH)₃(OH).

Schorl crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system and commonly forms elongated, deeply striated prismatic crystals. Its color is bluish-black to black, sometimes brownish-black.
