Bloodstone, also called Heliotrope, is a variety of chalcedony/jasper composed primarily of SiO2. It is typically dark green to greenish-blue with small red spots or patches, commonly associated with iron oxides such as hematite.
As a quartz-family material, Bloodstone has a Mohs hardness of about 6.5 to 7. It is commonly opaque to semi-translucent and is usually cut as cabochons, beads, carvings, or polished stones.
The name Bloodstone refers to the red markings that can resemble drops of blood. The alternate name Heliotrope comes from Greek words related to the sun and to turning.
