Topaz is an aluminum silicate fluoride/hydroxide mineral with the formula Al2(SiO4)(F,OH)2. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system.
Topaz has a Mohs hardness of 8 and specific gravity commonly around 3.4 to 3.6. Despite its hardness, it has perfect cleavage and can split from a hard blow.
Naturally strong blue Topaz is rare. Most vivid blue Topaz in the modern market begins as pale or colorless Topaz and is treated with irradiation followed by heat to create stable blue color. This treatment has been widespread since the late twentieth century.
Topaz occurs in granitic pegmatites, high-temperature veins, and cavities in certain igneous rocks.
