What Is Covellite?
Covellite is a copper sulfide mineral with the formula CuS. It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system and commonly appears as indigo-blue to blue-black metallic material, sometimes with purple, red, or brassy iridescent reflections.
Covellite is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of about 1.5 to 2, and has a specific gravity roughly between 4.6 and 4.76. It may form thin platy or foliated crystals, crusts, or massive material.
It forms in copper deposits, often as a secondary sulfide mineral produced by alteration of other copper minerals, though primary occurrences also exist.

Name Origin
François Sulpice Beudant named Covellite in 1832 in honor of Italian mineralogist Niccolò Covelli, who discovered the mineral at Mount Vesuvius.
