Fulgurite is a lightning-produced natural glass or glass-bearing rock, not a single mineral species. It forms when a lightning strike rapidly heats and fuses sand, soil, or rock along the electrical discharge path.
Sand fulgurites often form hollow, branching tubes with a rough sandy exterior and a glassy or partly glassy interior. Silica-rich fulgurites may contain lechatelierite, an amorphous silica glass with composition approximately SiO2.
Composition varies because the starting material varies. Some fulgurites are mostly silica glass; others contain melted and unmelted grains, oxides, and minerals from the soil or rock that was struck.
Fulgurites are generally fragile and should not be assigned one fixed Mohs hardness because they are heterogeneous natural glasses and fused sediments rather than a single uniform mineral.
