What Is Hackmanite?

Hackmanite is a tenebrescent variety of Sodalite, meaning it can undergo reversible photochromism. Its chemistry is that of Sodalite and is commonly represented as Na₈Al₆Si₆O₂₄Cl₂.

Hackmanite belongs to the isometric crystal system. Like Sodalite, it is generally around Mohs 5.5 to 6 with a specific gravity near 2.27 to 2.33.

Colors can include white, colorless, pink, purple, and blue. Sulfur-related defects are associated with its tenebrescence. In many specimens, short-wave ultraviolet light restores or deepens violet, pink, or purple color, while visible light gradually bleaches it again.

Hackmanite occurs in alkaline igneous environments alongside other feldspathoid minerals.
