Herkimer Diamonds are Quartz, not Diamond. The local name refers to exceptionally clear, highly lustrous, often doubly terminated Quartz crystals from cavities in dolostone in the Herkimer County region and surrounding areas of New York State.
The mineral is ordinary Quartz chemically, SiO2, with a Mohs hardness of 7, specific gravity near 2.65, and trigonal crystal structure.
Classic crystals commonly have short prism faces with strong terminations at both ends. Some contain fluid, hydrocarbon, or bituminous inclusions.
Name note: Similar doubly terminated Quartz occurs around the world, but locality-specific use of “Herkimer Diamond” is most accurate for material from the Herkimer region of New York.
