Calcite crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system, has a Mohs hardness of 3, a specific gravity near 2.71, and perfect rhombohedral cleavage.
The feature that made Iceland Spar scientifically famous is its strong double refraction: an object viewed through a clear crystal can appear doubled because light splits into two rays traveling through the crystal differently.
The variety name comes from the classic optical-grade material historically mined at Helgustadir in Iceland, although clear optical Calcite can occur elsewhere.
