What Is Iolite?
Iolite is gem-quality Cordierite, an aluminum-magnesium-iron silicate commonly represented as Mg2Al4Si5O18. Cordierite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system.
Iolite has a Mohs hardness of about 7 to 7.5 and a specific gravity near 2.61. It has distinct cleavage in one direction, so its toughness is only fair despite its hardness.
Its most famous gemological feature is strong pleochroism. Depending on viewing direction, one stone can show violet-blue, blue-gray, pale yellow, brownish, or nearly colorless appearances.
Treatment note: Iolite is not typically treated. Its blue-violet colors and pleochroism are normally natural.
