What Is Kunzite?

Kunzite is the pink to violet gem variety of the mineral spodumene. Spodumene has formula LiAlSi₂O₆ and crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. Kunzite's color is linked primarily to trace manganese.

Spodumene is around Mohs 6.5–7, but Kunzite has two perfect cleavage directions, making it considerably more impact-sensitive than its hardness number alone suggests. It is also strongly pleochroic, so color intensity changes with viewing direction.

Both natural and treated Kunzite color can fade with prolonged exposure to bright light or heat, so fine specimens and jewelry are best protected from strong sunlight.

History & Name

Pink spodumene from San Diego County, California was recognized as a distinct gem variety in 1902 by gemologist George Frederick Kunz. Chemist Charles Baskerville named the variety Kunzite in Kunz's honor in 1903.

Kunzite is therefore a relatively modern gem variety and has no ancient spiritual tradition under this name. Its metaphysical associations developed in modern crystal practice.
