What Is Kyanite?

Kyanite is a valid aluminum silicate mineral with formula Al₂SiO₅. It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system and commonly forms bladed crystals in metamorphic rocks.

One of Kyanite's most distinctive properties is its directional hardness. Along the length of a crystal it is roughly Mohs 4.5–5, while across the blade it may test around 6.5–7. This unusual difference historically contributed to the name disthene, meaning roughly “two strengths.”

Blue is the best-known color, but Kyanite can also occur colorless, gray, green, orange, black, and other shades depending on inclusions and chemistry.

The name Kyanite comes from Greek kyanos, referring to blue, reflecting the classic blue color of many specimens. Mineralogically, Kyanite is one of the Al₂SiO₅ polymorphs, along with andalusite and sillimanite.
