What Is Larimar?

Larimar is the trade name for blue gem-quality pectolite from the Dominican Republic. Pectolite has formula NaCa₂Si₃O₈(OH) and crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system.

Pectolite is generally around Mohs 4.5–5, making Larimar softer than quartz. The blue gem material occurs in altered volcanic rocks and may be intergrown with minerals such as natrolite, prehnite, calcite, and chlorite.

Modern geological research describes Larimar as forming through low-temperature hydrothermal alteration in Cretaceous volcanic rocks. Gem-quality blue pectolite known commercially as Larimar is strongly associated with the Dominican Republic.

History & Name

Larimar entered modern gem commerce after its rediscovery in the Dominican Republic in the 1970s. Miguel Méndez coined the name by combining part of his daughter Larissa's name with the Spanish word mar, meaning sea.

The modern trade name therefore does not represent an ancient mineral name, and current metaphysical meanings are modern rather than evidence of one ancient spiritual tradition.
