What Is Malachite?

Malachite is a secondary copper mineral with the formula Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of approximately 3.5 to 4.

It is famous for bright to deep green color, concentric banding, botryoidal forms, fibrous textures and crystalline aggregates. Malachite commonly forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits.

History & Name

Malachite has been used for ornament, pigment and decorative objects for thousands of years. Its name traces to Greek wording associated with the green leaves of the mallow plant. Ancient use is historically documented; specific modern chakra and crystal-healing systems are much later traditions.
