Manganite is a manganese oxyhydroxide mineral with formula Mn³⁺O(OH). It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, commonly forms black to gray-black prismatic crystals, and has a Mohs hardness of approximately 4. Its measured specific gravity is about 4.29 to 4.34.

Manganite commonly occurs in manganese deposits and hydrothermal settings and may alter to other manganese oxides near the surface.

History & Name

Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger named Manganite in 1827 in reference to its manganese content. Its type locality is at Ilfeld in Thuringia, Germany.
