What Is Marcasite?
Marcasite is an iron sulfide mineral with formula FeS2. It has the same chemistry as pyrite but a different crystal structure. Marcasite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, while pyrite is cubic. Its Mohs hardness is approximately 6 to 6.5.
Fresh Marcasite may appear pale brass-yellow to tin-white and commonly forms tabular, radiating, globular or twinned crystals, including distinctive “cockscomb” and “spear” forms.
History & Name
The word “marcasite” was historically used loosely for metallic sulfide minerals, especially pyrite-like material. Modern mineralogy distinguishes true Marcasite from Pyrite by crystal structure.
