What Is Mimetite?
Mimetite is a lead arsenate chloride mineral with formula Pb5(AsO4)3Cl. It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system, belongs to the Apatite Group, has a Mohs hardness of approximately 3.5 to 4, and is very dense, with specific gravity around 7.24.
Colors can include pale yellow, orange-yellow, orange-red, brownish yellow, green, white or colorless. It commonly forms prismatic, barrel-shaped, botryoidal or rounded aggregates.
History & Name
François Sulpice Beudant named Mimetite in 1835 from the Greek word for “imitator,” because the mineral resembles Pyromorphite. It commonly occurs in oxidized zones of lead deposits.
