What Is Moonstone?

Moonstone is a gemstone variety in the feldspar group, traditionally associated with orthoclase and albite. During formation, microscopic feldspar layers can separate. Light scattering between those layers creates the floating glow known as adularescence.

GIA lists a representative chemistry of KAlSi₃O₈ and a Mohs hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5. Moonstone may be colorless, white, gray, peach, green, brown or other soft shades. Other feldspars can also display adularescence, so gemological identification is more precise than color or sheen alone.

History & Lore

Moonstone has been admired in several cultures because its moving light resembles moonlight. It became especially prominent in jewelry during the Art Nouveau period.
