What Is Nuummite?
Nuummite is not an approved mineral species. It is an unapproved trade name for an iridescent metamorphic rock from the Nuuk area of Greenland. Genuine Greenland material contains intergrown orthoamphiboles of the Anthophyllite-Gedrite series. Very fine alternating lamellae within these amphiboles produce the characteristic golden, bronze and sometimes blue iridescent flashes.
The rock occurs in very ancient Precambrian terrain near Nuuk. Because the name is a trade term tied to this material, provenance matters when distinguishing genuine Nuummite from other dark iridescent rocks sold under the same name.
History & Name
The trade name was introduced in the twentieth century and refers to Nuuk, Greenland; Nuummite essentially means “from Nuuk.” Samples of the rock were collected in the region long before the modern trade name was established.
