Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of quartz. In mineralogical usage, true onyx shows straight, parallel bands, traditionally black and white, although other dark-and-light banded material can also be called onyx.

Natural, Dyed & Misnamed Onyx

Dark Onyx has historically been enhanced by dyeing, and the word “onyx” is also used commercially for banded calcite or travertine sold as “onyx marble.” Those decorative carbonate stones are geologically different from chalcedony Onyx.
