What Is Prasiolite?

Prasiolite is green quartz, SiO₂. Like other quartz, it crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of 7.

Natural prasiolite is rare. Much of the green quartz sold commercially as Prasiolite is produced by carefully heating or irradiating suitable amethyst or quartz material. The trade term “green amethyst” is sometimes used, but Prasiolite is the clearer gemological name for green quartz.
