Ruby is the red gem variety of corundum, aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃). The red color is produced primarily by chromium substituting into the crystal structure. Corundum of other gem colors is generally called sapphire, while sufficiently red material is classified as ruby.

Care & Handling
Untreated and conventionally heat-treated Ruby is generally very durable, and warm soapy water is normally safe. However, fracture-filled, cavity-filled, dyed, or otherwise heavily treated material needs gentler care and may be damaged by heat, chemicals, ultrasonic cleaning, or steam. When treatment status is unknown, use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush or cloth.
