Tanzanite is the blue-violet to violet-blue gem variety of Zoisite. It is commercially mined in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania and is known for strong pleochroism, meaning a single crystal can show different colors when viewed in different directions.

What Is Tanzanite?

Tanzanite is a gem variety of Zoisite, with the zoisite formula Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)₃(OH). It has a Mohs hardness of about 6–7 and crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. Its blue-violet color is associated with trace vanadium and is strongly influenced by pleochroism.

History & Treatment

Tanzanite entered the gem market after discoveries in Tanzania in the 1960s. Most commercially available Tanzanite is heat treated to reduce brownish or yellow-green components and emphasize blue and violet colors. Heat treatment is accepted in the gem trade but should be disclosed when known.
