What Is Topaz?

Topaz has the idealized formula Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂, crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, and defines hardness 8 on the Mohs scale. Despite its hardness, perfect basal cleavage means it can split if struck in the wrong direction.

Color & Treatment

Natural Topaz occurs in many colors. Colorless Topaz is abundant and is commonly treated by irradiation followed by heating to create commercial blue colors. Treatments are normal in the gem trade but should be disclosed when known.
