Ulexite is a soft sodium-calcium borate mineral best known for its natural fiber-optic effect. Parallel bundles of fine crystals can transmit an image from one face of a specimen to the other, which is why massive fibrous material is often nicknamed “TV rock.”

What Is Ulexite?
Ulexite is a triclinic hydrated sodium-calcium borate with the formula NaCa[B5O6(OH)6]·5H2O. It has a Mohs hardness of about 2.5 and commonly forms silky, fibrous aggregates in evaporite deposits.
The “TV Rock” Effect
When the fibers are aligned perpendicular to two polished faces, each fiber can guide light by internal reflection. Together the fibers transmit an image through the specimen, making printed words appear to sit on the upper surface.
History & Name
Ulexite was named for German chemist Georg Ludwig Ulex, who correctly analyzed the mineral. Classic occurrences are associated with borate-rich evaporite deposits in arid regions.
